Electric Mobility in Costa Rica’s Tourism Subsector

The main objective of this project is to conduct a comprehensive analysis of the operational conditions of the transportation sector, specifically focusing on the special passenger transport subsector within the tourism industry, to establish a progressive transformation strategy for replacing conventional fleets (fuel-based) with electric fleets. The initiative aims to drive the transition toward more sustainable mobility in the tourism sector, contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and aligning with national and international decarbonization commitments.

Specific objectives include:

  1. Analyzing the processes, conditions, and operational characteristics of passenger transportation in the tourism sector.

  2. Assessing the current and planned capacity of the country’s charging infrastructure network.

  3. Investigating the state-of-the-art technology for electric passenger vehicles in the international market.

  4. Characterizing the local supply of electric vehicles suitable for tourism-related passenger transport, considering the specific needs and conditions of this market.

  5. Developing a technical and financial pre-feasibility study to evaluate the opportunities and challenges for tourism companies in transitioning to electric units.

  6. Proposing a progressive transformation strategy to facilitate the replacement of conventional vehicles with electric ones in the tourism sector.

This project will not only provide a clear roadmap for the adoption of electric vehicles in the tourism sector but also lay the groundwork for replicating this model in other transportation subsectors, promoting cleaner and more sustainable mobility across the country.
