Identification of Decarbonization Options in the Fishing, Sugarcane, and Wood Sectors in Costa Rica

Project description

Through this study, Climate Lead Group (CLG) analyzed emission-generating processes in each sector and assessed current technologies alongside viable decarbonization alternatives. Drawing on stakeholder input and publicly available data, the analysis documented costs, performance, and emission impacts, while also identifying legal, technical, economic, and market barriers to implementation and proposing solutions aligned with international best practices. Using cost-benefit analysis (CBA) and sensitivity testing, the project evaluated the financial viability of mitigation options and identified conditions under which their adoption becomes more attractive. Key results included the development of marginal abatement cost curves to prioritize actions based on cost-effectiveness, and sector-specific mitigation scenarios integrated into an updated national decarbonization catalog. Through this work, CLG provided practical, evidence-based guidance to support Costa Rica’s transition to a low-carbon economy and delivered a replicable analytical framework for advancing decarbonization in productive sectors in other countries.
