Support for Costa Rica's Green Hydrogen Strategy through an Analysis of Possible Production Pathways
Project description
In response to this, Climate Lead Group (CLG) supported the generation of these pathways addressing the need for quantitative evidence to assess how hydrogen could contribute to national climate goals and long-term energy planning. Through this project, CLG analyzed alternative technological pathways for hydrogen deployment in Costa Rica, assessing different combinations of hydrogen production, storage, transport, and end-use technologies, considering costs, resource availability, infrastructure constraints, and national climate targets. This work identified efficient and realistic development pathways aligned with the objectives of the National Hydrogen Strategy, highlighting investment needs, potential bottlenecks, and opportunities for integration with other energy sectors. Also, the project prioritized the engagement with public and private stakeholders in the validation of results. Overall, the project provided robust quantitative evidence to support strategic decision-making, inform enabling policies, and strengthen long-term planning around hydrogen as a key vector of Costa Rica’s energy transition.
