Through the project “Study and Proposal for the Location and Installation of a Charging Station Network in Ecuador”, Climate Lead Group (CLG) supported the Government of Ecuador, in collaboration with the Inter-American Development Bank, in the strategic planning of a electric vehicle charging network as part of the country’s Sustainable Mobility Plan. The project addressed key barriers to electromobility, including the lack of an optimized charging network, the need for clear technical and economic criteria, and the integration of new demand into the electricity grid. The study combined advanced power flow analysis of distribution networks with geospatial analysis to identify optimal locations for charging stations in urban and interurban corridors. This approach considered mobility patterns, grid capacity, and future demand, while parallel financial and business models assessed the viability of public and private charging infrastructure, including tariff structures and incentive mechanisms. The project was developed through a participatory process involving public institutions, electricity distribution companies, regulators, and private sector stakeholders, ensuring technical validation, knowledge transfer, and institutional ownership. Key results included practical tools for strategic infrastructure planning, regulatory recommendations adapted to the national context, guidance to minimize impacts on the power system, and a phased roadmap for network deployment. Through its data-driven and policy-oriented approach, CLG provided robust technical inputs to accelerate electric vehicle adoption in Ecuador, supporting national goals on sustainable mobility, emissions reduction, and energy system modernization.
